Marina Abramovic – Artist and Performer

magazine for fashion

Marina Abramovic is an internationally renowned performer of performance art. She is well-known for her long-duration performances which are both mentally and physically demanding. Her body is the central element of her artworks. She has explored many different forms of bodily expressions such as drawing, polaroid photography and perfume.

Her art is rooted in her own history, and has been described as a "resonant realism" that addresses repression and societal structures through visceral, self-injurious actions. Her artistic career began in the 1970s. She produced a series of performances exploring risk and pain with symbolism.

In her Rhythm series she used embodiment to explore universal topics such as death and sorrow, time and limits of human consciousness. Her 'Rhythm 0-" performance was her most famous, allowing viewers the opportunity to touch her body and interact with it in an unscripted interactive show.

She also performed outside of Australia in deserts. There she was able heal from the trauma of her childhood and escape from her home country. These experiences motivated her to shift her focus from the physicality of her work to the mental.

Abramovic has had a number of exhibitions throughout her career, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has been hailed alongside Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman and Chris Burden as one of the pioneers of contemporary performance art.

The Artist Is Here

The Artist is Present, her most famous performance art, was created in 2010 by the acclaimed performance artist. The piece lasted three months and attracted hundreds of thousands of people who waited hours to be seated next to her. This experience is an art world first. It is a public engagement initiative that increased audience participation and enhanced interaction between the artist, her public and her public.

Biography

Abramovic studied painting in Belgrade before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. She later received an MA in fine arts from the University of Oxford and a PhD in visual art from Harvard.

After moving to Amsterdam in 1975, she met Uwe Laysiepen (Ulay), a similarly-minded German artist. They developed a close working relationship over five years. They lived together and worked in a Citroen van. They worked together on many other projects, including Nightsea Crossing (1981-1987), in which they sat motionless for many days.

The Kitchen, Homage at Saint Therese

Abramovic visited Gijon, Spain in 2009 to take photos of herself in La Laboral's kitchen, a nunnery. The photo-portrait represents Abramovic's own beliefs about life, her connection with nature, and a desire to honor the 16th century nun.

The Lovers

Ulay, Abramovic’s long-term partner, announced the breakup in 1988 through a long-distance walk performance called The Lovers. They marched towards each other along the Great Wall of China for 2,500km, and then met at the middle. The performance is now a major art historical work and was shown in Russia, Germany and many other countries around the globe.
